Our best meal during our week in Tulum

Check this restaurant out for gourmet food at a reasonable price. My partner and I had two fish dishes, an appetizer, a dessert and two glasses of wine each for less than $100 (USD). When combined with the fabulous service and really interesting after dinner shots (complimentary) this makes for a great date restaurant.

You’ll find Unico on the Coba road right off of the Tulum road going towards the Coba ruins. It’s a small place and cute on the inside.

We tried the tomato carpaccio appetizer. It was really unique and quite delicious. The salad contains very thinly sliced tomato and parmesan dressed with balsamic. This was one of my favorite dishes.

We also had a special shrimp pasta dish with homemade pasta. The homemade pasta was quite good, but I ended up preferring my husbands fish with roasted peppers. The fish was perfectly cooked, flaky and delicious.

Finally, we had the NY cheesecake. The cheesecake was incredibly fluffy and creamy, not heavy at all. The strawberry coulis tasted exactly like my mom’s homemade strawberry jam. Yum. My husband also wants me to mention that “Bryans sangria” is “awesome”.

Ivan (the waiter) is sweet, professional and efficient. Bryan (the chef) came out to chat with us a bit and clearly cared that we were enjoying our experience.

The only negative part of the entire experience was the location. It’s right on a busy street. We sat inside and were not bothered at all. I can only imagine that if it were located on the beach the prices would skyrocket.

Food to please the tastebuds

Menu full, brillant, dynamic and has something for everyone. We had the fried goat cheese balls in honey and the stuffed avocado to start. Highly recommended. My steak was a huge serving and delicious. They fish was also cooked to perfection! The staff and chef were so hospitable and gracious. Although it is in town off the beaten path, it is so worth making the trip. It is 3 buildings back from the main intersection in Tulum. Not far at all and highly recommended!

A lovely find

We’ve visited Tulum many times but tend to stick to our favorite restaurants on the beach road. All of the glowing reviews on Tripadvisor convinced us to try Unico, and we were not disappointed. Service was truly exquisite, the food was fresh, local, and delicious, and it was top to bottom just a really nice experience. Kudos to chef Brian, Ivan our waiter, and the entire staff for such a great evening.

Fantastic Food

While not inexpensive, the food at Unico was fantastic — creative, flavorful and worth every penny. It’s certainly one of the finest restaurants in Tulum (and, I imagine the Yucatan) and I highly recommend not missing it.

Something special

We went to this restaurant based on the Trip Reviews. We were not disappointed in fact we had a quality meal with quality service. The complimentary bread and hummus was exceptional. I had stuffed zucchini starter and my husband had shrimps in avocado sauce – amazing. We both had the rib eye steak with wild mushrooms and this was fantastic. Husband and wife team are exceptional and the food was quality and sensibly priced and the service was superb. We will definitely be visiting again before we return home. This has to be the best restaurant in Tulum.

Watch out NOMA and Renè, UNICO & Brian are right behind you !

Just back from a trip to Mexico`s Yucatan peninsula looking at Mayan ruins and getting your nose sunburned, we also “discovered” a gem of a restaurant in Tulum, called UNICO. We visited a thursday night around 6:30 and had a very friendly welcome from Ivan, their waiter. A young guy who just seemed to love his job, and afterwards we understand why. The restaurant has a very good ambience in shaded blue and grey colors, and even if we were alone, it felt cozy.
The menu is just outstanding if you like gourmet food, and made with mostly local ingredients. My wife had a very good roasted beet-salad with goat-cheese, and I had fried goat-cheese decorated with honey. What a treat. Not only was it very tasty, but the servings were nearly work of art, WOW. Then we both had the grilled Red Snapper with roasted red pebbers and other delicious greens and with a wonderful green avocado purè sauce. Outstanding ! As in all very good restaurants, the servings were not huge, so we had “space” for dessert, and here Chef Bryan again created 2 masterpieces. The cheese-cake decorated with strawberry sauce was the best ever for my wife, and I got a heavenly piece of dark chocolate cake with vanilla ice and raspberry purè. Ivan, the waiter and Bryan, the chef was delightful people and we felt treated like “royalty”. And their after dinner drink made of Anis and fermented honey, which they served with the check was again outstanding/tasty/delicious.
This was such a great experience, that we ordered a table for the next night too, which we have never done before anywhere in the world. And just to tell you, next night was as good or better, but it will make this “short” story way to long to write about too, OK? All in all if you are in or around Tulum and you don`t visit UNICO, Bryan and Ivan, we can only feel sorry for your “loss”.
Thank you from 2 BIG FANS from US & Denmark. And remember as chef Bryan told us, UNICO means unique, OK?

Very good restaurant in Tulum downtown

We went there on our third evening in Tulum and we did not regret our choice! The food is prepared Gourmet-like and really tasteful. Also the owner is so nice and talks to each guest. He is a real restaurant chief who knows how to run a business and the best, how to cook! Very recommendable!

A newyorker in Tulum !!!!!!

Away from the busy hotel zone, just on the left side of “route 109″ to Valladolid (off main street). What an incredible place : just very good, tasty, fresh. I wish we have such a nice and very affordable place in Monte Carlo. Waiter is very nice. Don’t miss it!!!!!!!

Talented chef in an offbeat location

Came to eat here with my girlfriend after a long day of exploring the ruins. We were drawn to the restaurant by the quaint decor and great reviews on TripAdvisor and immediately made reservations. We weren’t disappointed!

Chef Brian, who used to work as both a private chef in NYC and at the famed Gramercy Tavern, cooked us a unique vegetable lasagna dish and a glorious red snapper dish. We were both blown away by the distinctive palette of flavors each dish offered. Brian was even nice enough to give us some free appertives and appetizers. I would highly recommend this treasure to anyone exploring the Tulum area.

Liked it so much we went there twice!

We went here on of our first nights in Tulum. The service was impeccable, with a very kind and polite waiter. After we ordered, we received some homemade bread with a red pepper hummus which was delicious. The first night we had the sea bass and the lobster ravioli (made in house, I believe). The sea bass was cooked perfectly and my guy loved it. My lobster ravioli were creamy and subtle. We were too full for dessert. The meal ended with a free shot of a locally produced liqueur made with honey and anise.

We went back a few nights later, and fortunately had the same waiter. This time, my husband craving a burger and had theirs – it was well seasoned and cooked and tasty. I had a mussel special. The mussels were fresh and clean tasting, and the white wine broth was excellent. We did save room for dessert this time and had their bread pudding with candied pistachios. The bread pudding itself was unremarkable, but the candied pistachios were great. We will go back the next time we are in Tulum.

And one other note – they serve breakfast from 3:00 p.m. (when they open each day) until close. It sounded great, but i was in the mood for dinner at dinnertime. It did confuse us looking at the menu online at first, however, thinking they might be open in the morning for breakfast. They are not.
